This page writes Brother PES as Janome or Elna JEF, and it writes JEF back to PES. Rose Crest starts on a 140 by 140 mm SQ14b field. The design is centered on export. The free JEF stores a Janome color index.
DST and EXP store color stops only, not RGB

Brand matching is a reading list. It is not written into the free machine file. DST files have no RGB to match.
The color-stop list beside the hoop shows every stop, its stitch count, Brother and Janome codes, and the ΔE for this brand.
Short stitches are under 0.4 mm. Long jumps are over 6.0 mm when the next command is not a trim. Paid cleanup uses 0.45 mm.

Janome field
SQ14b is 140 by 140 mm. RE20b is 140 by 200 mm. Rose Crest at 88.0 by 84.0 mm fits SQ14b with room on both axes. Rotate it 90 degrees and the size becomes 84.0 by 88.0 mm. The stitch count stays 6,420. Flip X mirrors the path and does not change the size.
A brother pes to janome jef file is centered so the design’s middle sits on the hoop origin within 0.5 mm. Janome and Elna read JEF. They do not read PES. This page is the format change, not a second copy of the home converter with the letters swapped.
The reverse direction is a jef to pes converter on this same page. Choose PES and the file is a Brother PES with a Brother 64 color byte. The on-screen match for Rose Crest stop 1 stays Janome #244, which is the machine index, not a ΔE line.
Varsity Monogram A is 96.0 by 96.0 mm and 4,810 stitches, still inside SQ14b. Nordic Snowflake is 148.0 by 148.0 mm, so it does not fit a 140 mm square until you scale it. The hoop status says so before you download.
Color index
A free JEF color table is a Janome machine index. Rose Crest stop 1, RGB 180, 34, 50, maps to Janome #244. That line does not include a ΔE, because this page is showing the index the format can hold, not a Madeira recipe.
Madeira #1838, Isacord #1904, Sulky #1034, and Robison-Anton #2418 are the same red read on other brands. They stay on the screen unless you buy the thread pack. The pack writes the numeric catalog code into a JEF color table. A PES byte cannot hold 1838.
Stop stitch counts stay with the design. Rose Crest is 2,100, 1,600, 1,200, 900, and 620. Changing the format does not recolor the path and does not change those counts. The summary still shows jumps and trims beside the size.
Elna machines that read JEF use this same file. There is no separate Elna format on this bench. If the hoop is RE20b, the field is 140 by 200 mm, so a tall design may fit in one orientation and not the other.
Check before you sew
Export centers the bounding box. A read-back of the JEF should report the same stitch count and a size within 0.5 mm of the hoop. If you rotated to 84.0 by 88.0 mm, that is the size the file should show.
Leave about 3 mm inside the field when you can. The pass or fail test still uses the full field. A design that clears the field by less than 3 mm on one side gets a tight note, and the Fits line does not change.
Geometric scale from 80% to 120% is downloadable and keeps 6,420 stitches on Rose Crest. Density resampling is a preview here and a file only in the 24-file seller bundle. Do not expect a free JEF to invent stitches you did not load.
The file never leaves the browser until you download it. A paid pack, if you buy one, is built in memory from the stitch coordinates and returned as a ZIP. It is not stored. Run a scrap sew-out before a garment.
Sequence
Start with Rose Crest, Varsity, or Nordic, or drop a PES or JEF. The 140 mm hoop is selected.
Stop 1 on Rose Crest reads Janome #244. That is the machine color, not a Madeira spool.
A quarter turn swaps 88.0 by 84.0 mm to 84.0 by 88.0 mm. Flip X mirrors without a new size.
Download the centered file. Read-back size and stitch count should match the hoop within 0.5 mm.
Where it fits
The machine asked for JEF. This page writes that file and checks SQ14b before you walk to the hoop. Compare it on the main converter.
Pick PES. The color byte becomes a Brother 64 index. The Janome number stays on screen as Janome #244. See how DST color differs.
Varsity Monogram A can sit either way. Rotate, confirm the stitch count is unchanged, then export. Or send the same crest to DST.
The embroidery hoop size checker lists all 30 sewing fields in millimetres and inches. The DST thread color sheet shows why a Tajima stop has no RGB to recover.
Questions
No. A Janome or Elna reads JEF. This page writes a JEF with the design centered and the nearest color from the Janome machine palette.
Yes. The same page writes PES from JEF. The target keyword jef to pes converter is this direction, not a separate tool.
SQ14b is 140 by 140 mm and RE20b is 140 by 200 mm. The full hoop list is on the hoop checker page.
The free JEF stores a Janome machine color index, which the format requires. Madeira, Isacord, Sulky, and Robison-Anton numbers are written into a file only in the paid thread pack.
