Embroidery hoop size checker

Open the embroidery file converter after you pick a field. The fit test on that hoop uses these millimetres, not the outer frame.

Diagram

100 mm field inside the frame

The outer rectangle is the frame. The inner square is the 100 by 100 mm sewing field, drawn larger than the field only so both edges stay visible. A design has to land inside the inner square.

Fields

The field is smaller than the frame

Every converter on this site uses the sewing field, not the plastic frame. A Brother or Baby Lock 4×4 field is 100 by 100 mm. That is 3.94 by 3.94 inches. A design of 95 by 95 mm fits. A design of 101 mm on either side does not. The drawing on this page shows a 100 mm field drawn inside a larger frame so those two sizes are not the same rectangle.

The 5×7 field is 130 by 180 mm, which is 5.12 by 7.09 inches. The 6×10 field is 160 by 260 mm, or 6.30 by 10.24 inches. Rose Crest at 88 by 84 mm fits the 4×4 field with 6.0 mm of side clearance and 8.0 mm of vertical clearance.

The bench sample at 110 by 70 mm exceeds a 4×4 field by 10.0 mm. The same file fits the 5×7 field with 10.0 by 55.0 mm of clearance. A quarter turn is only suggested when the swapped size fits and the current size does not.

Janome C is 50 by 50 mm. Janome A is 126 by 110 mm. RE20b is 140 by 200 mm and SQ14b is 140 by 140 mm. SQ20b and the 200 mm square are 200 by 200 mm. The 200×280 mm hoop and GR at 230 by 300 mm are the larger Janome fields. A 148 mm snowflake fits SQ20b and misses SQ14b.

Fields

Thirty fields, one millimetre rule

Bernina Medium is stored as 100 by 130 mm, not 130 by 100. Large Oval is 145 by 255 mm. Mega is 150 by 400 mm and Jumbo is 400 by 260 mm. If a design misses in the stored orientation and fits after a quarter turn, the tool says Fits if rotated 90°. The chart does not silently swap the numbers.

Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff fields on this list are 120 by 120 mm, 240 by 150 mm, 260 by 200 mm, and 360 by 200 mm. Singer repeats the common 100, 130 by 180, and 200 by 300 mm fields under its own name. The brand label changes. The millimetres are what the fit test uses.

Commercial 100 mm round is a 100 by 100 mm field, not a circle test. Tajima 150 mm round is the circle: the safe diameter is 142 mm, which is 5.59 inches. A design fits when the diagonal of its width and height is within 142 mm. A 100 mm square has a 141.4 mm diagonal and fits. A 110 by 70 mm design has a 130.4 mm diagonal and also fits that circle.

The cap frame is 60 by 360 mm. A wide jacket back at 300 by 360 mm is the 12×14 field. The 16×22 field is 400 by 560 mm. Those three are easy to confuse with home hoops if a chart only says “large.” The millimetre columns are there so a 260 mm height is not called a 6×10.

Fields

How to use the table with a file

Clearance advice is about 3 mm inside the field. The pass or fail test does not subtract those 3 mm. A 97 mm design in a 100 mm field fits and is marked tight because each side has only 1.5 mm. A 95 mm design has 2.5 mm a side and is also tight. The Fits line stays Fits. Tight is a separate badge.

Inches on this page are millimetres divided by 25.4, shown to two decimals, half away from zero. 100 mm is 3.94 inches, not 4.00. 142 mm is 5.59 inches. 130 mm is 5.12 inches and 180 mm is 7.09 inches. If another chart says 4.00, it is rounding the frame or the marketing name, not this sewing field.

Brother 8×8 is 200 by 200 mm. Brother 8×12 is 200 by 300 mm. Brother 9.5×14 is 240 by 360 mm. Brother 10.6×16 is 272 by 408 mm. A design that fails a 4×4 can be legal on one of those without any scale. Check the table before you resample stitches.

The converters link here because a hoop menu with thirty entries is hard to compare while a file is open. Use the table to pick an id, then return to the hoop and choose that same id. The fit math is identical: rectangle fields compare width and height, and the Tajima circle compares the diagonal with 142 mm.

Nothing on this page uploads a design. The diagram is drawn from the 100 mm field and a larger frame. The inches are the same function the converters use when you press the inch button. If a number here and a number on the hoop disagree, the millimetre column is the one the status uses.

Questions

Reading the chart

Is a 4×4 hoop actually 4 inches?

The sewing field is 100 by 100 mm, which is 3.94 inches. The frame around that field is larger. A design marked 4×4 has to fit inside the field.

Why do some charts swap width and height?

A hoop can sit either way. This checker uses the order's orientation for Bernina Medium, 100 by 130 mm, and Large Oval, 145 by 255 mm. If a quarter turn would fit, the note says so.

How much clearance should I leave?

Try to leave about 3 mm inside the field. The status still uses the full field: a 95 mm design in a 100 mm field fits, and a separate Tight badge appears under 3 mm.

Which round hoop is the 142 mm one?

Tajima 150 mm round uses a 142 mm safe circle. A design fits when its diagonal is within 142 mm. The commercial 100 mm round on this chart is a 100 by 100 mm field.
